Firefighter Training
Once appointed as a Cadet Firefighter each successful applicant must complete an apprenticeship program and probationary period and maintain a satisfactory on-the-job rating. Apprenticeship program includes:
Certification by the National registry and State of Ohio as an EMT
Certification by the State of Ohio as a Structural Firefighter
The apprenticeship program and training lasts 12 weeks, during which compensation is $10.50/hour. Upon completion of the FTA, Cadets are assigned to an Engine Company, Hook & Ladder, or Rescue Squad and training continues under an officer.
Opportunities for Advancement
A firefighter may advance through continued education and testing, and after several years of service may become eligible for promotion to the rank of Lieutenant. The line of further promotion is Captain, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief and finally Chief of the Division. Advancement is determined by a candidate's position on a list which ranks firefighters through use of a competitive exam.

There are no “trick” questions. Use common sense, clear thinking, and general knowledge to help you answer the questions correctly.
Make sure you answer every question on the examination. An unanswered question is automatically a WRONG answer.
You will probably have more time than you need to finish the examination. Double check your answer sheet to ensure that you have answered all questions.
Examination ResultsExamination results will be mailed approximately two (2) weeks following the examination. You will receive your standing on the eligibility list approximately one (1) week following the receipt of your grade. Part-Time In-House Firefighter/EMT
You'll be working every third day Monday thru Friday, a maximum of 60 hours per pay and no more than 1,500 hours per year. Positions are currently filled by using the latest test list established by the Miami Valley Fire and EMS Alliance (testing is typically given three times a year). Firefighter
Findlay, OH
The Findlay Fire Department is a 74-member full paid professional department staffing four fire stations and a Fire Prevention Bureau within the City of Findlay. Each station is staffed by three shifts of firefighters rotating 24 hours on duty, 48 hours off duty. All firefighters are trained in First Responder Medical, Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Hazardous Materials Operational, CPR and several other areas of expertise. All firefighters hired complete six weeks of training at the Ohio Fire Academy in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Firefighters are trained in Level I and Level II classes and obtain an EMT Basic Certification.
Benefits and Pay
Starting salary for new firefighters is $33,904.00 annually and progresses up to a top pay of $49,296.00 for class A firefighters over an eight-year period. Longevity pay and Education pay is in addition to base pay. The City of Findlay provides full hospital/medical insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, sick leave pay, and vacation benefits. The City also provides all uniforms (including Nomex), firefighting equipment and training costs.
How to Apply
The Findlay Fire Department is covered under the laws of the State of Ohio Civil Service Commission and the local Civil Service Commission. The hiring of all firefighters is through the local Civil Service Commission who administers all of the necessary testing for candidates. The testing is a two step process with a written test and a physical fitness agility test. Additional credit is given on written test score for those applicants who have Military credit (20%), a degree in Fire Science (10% -15%), are currently certified in the State of Ohio as a firefighter (5%) or currently hold a valid EMT certificate (5%). All candidates must be between the ages of 18 and not have reached their 31st birthday and pass a medical & psychological examination. You are also required to have a valid driver's license and establish residence within Hancock County or adjoining counties within 60 days of hire date.
