Firefighter Training:
Once appointed as a Cadet Firefighter each successful applicant must complete an apprenticeship program and probationary period and maintain a satisfactory on-the-job rating. Apprenticeship program includes: Certification by the National registry and State of Ohio as an EMT; Certification by the State of Ohio as a Structural Firefighter; The apprenticeship program and training lasts 12 weeks, during which compensation is $10.50/hour. Upon completion of the FTA, Cadets are assigned to an Engine Company, Hook & Ladder, or Rescue Squad and training continues under an officer.

To qualify for the position of firefighter, candidates must complete the following steps in the testing/selection process:
An application and Abbreviated Background Questionnaire (ABQ) must be submitted with the Columbus Civil Service Commission. To receive an application packet by mail, please see previous step. The application requirements are: 1. at least 17½ years of age at the time of application and 18 years old in order to be appointed; 2. valid driver's license at time of application and valid Ohio driver's license at time of appointment; 3. high school diploma or GED at time of appointment; 4. U.S. citizen.
If the application and ABQ are approved, the Civil Service Commission will notify the applicant of the time and place to report for the examination. Prior to the test, preparation materials will be provided and information sessions will be offered. Candidates are strongly advised to utilize these materials and attend these sessions. The examination will include a multiple-choice test, a physical capabilities test, and an oral exam. Candidates who pass all three phases of the exam will be placed on an eligible list based on their final score.
Candidates who score well enough on the Civil Service examination(s) to begin the background process will be mailed a personal history questionnaire (PHQ). At a later date, candidates will be required to attend a pre-interview with a background investigator at Fire Headquarters. Pictures, fingerprints, and waivers will be completed to assist in an extensive background investigation. Candidates' PHQs will be reviewed to ensure compliance with the background removal standards prior to scheduling of the polygraph examination. Candidates will then complete a pre-polygraph questionnaire and the polygraph examination will be conducted to verify the accuracy and completeness of all the information provided. The Civil Service Commission will review the polygraph summary and PHQ to ensure there are no violations of the background removal standards for employment with the Division of Fire. The background investigative summary is sent to the Oral Review Board, which consists of firefighters. Candidates are required to be interviewed by this board and questions will be asked regarding the background investigation.
Oral Review Board recommendations and background investigations will be reviewed by the chain of command and a summary will be forwarded to the Director of Public Safety. The Director will make the final decision regarding conditional offers of employment.
After being given a conditional offer of employment, a rigorous medical examination will be administered, including vision, cardiovascular stress tests, and a psychological evaluation. These tests must be passed before you can be appointed to the position of Firefighter. The vision requirements state that vision must be correctable to 20/30 binocular and no more than 20/100 uncorrected in each eye.

Findlay Fire Department - Findlay, Ohio
The Findlay Fire Department is a 74-member full paid professional department staffing four fire stations and a Fire Prevention Bureau within the City of Findlay. Each station is staffed by three shifts of firefighters rotating 24 hours on duty, 48 hours off duty. All firefighters are trained in First Responder Medical, Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Hazardous Materials Operational, CPR and several other areas of expertise. All firefighters hired complete six weeks of training at the Ohio Fire Academy in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Firefighters are trained in Level I and Level II classes and obtain an EMT Basic Certification.
Benefits and Pay
Starting salary for new firefighters is $33,904.00 annually and progresses up to a top pay of $49,296.00 for class A firefighters over an eight-year period. Longevity pay and Education pay is in addition to base pay. The City of Findlay provides full hospital/medical insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, sick leave pay, and vacation benefits. The City also provides all uniforms (including Nomex), firefighting equipment and training costs.
How to Apply
The Findlay Fire Department is covered under the laws of the State of Ohio Civil Service Commission and the local Civil Service Commission. The hiring of all firefighters is through the local Civil Service Commission who administers all of the necessary testing for candidates. The testing is a two step process with a written test and a physical fitness agility test. Additional credit is given on written test score for those applicants who have Military credit (20%), a degree in Fire Science (10% -15%), are currently certified in the State of Ohio as a firefighter (5%) or currently hold a valid EMT certificate (5%). All candidates must be between the ages of 18 and not have reached their 31st birthday and pass a medical & psychological examination. You are also required to have a valid driver's license and establish residence within Hancock County or adjoining counties within 60 days of hire date.
Upon announcement of the test, applications may be obtained at the Mayor's office in the Municipal Building , the Civil Service Commission office or the Fire Chief's office at 720 South Main St., Findlay, Ohio 45840.

Full-time employees are hired under the direction of the City of Willoughby Civil Service Commission. Positions are filled subsequent to examination and establishment of an eligibility list. The examination process varies depending on the position to be filled.
Full-time firefighter/paramedic applicants must successfully complete a written examination, physical abilities test, and a variety of screening procedures prior to establishment of an eligibility list and appointment. The testing process is generally conducted once every two years.
In order to be eligible to participate in the examination process, applicants must hold current Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic certification (State of Ohio or National Registry) and retain the certification throughout employment with the City of Willoughby.

Capable of successfully completing an extensive medical examination appropriate to essential class functions.
Vision screening will be part of the medical exam and will include color vision tests and other relevant visual screenings. Vision requirements must be met in accordance with current NFPA standards. Far visual acuity less than 20/40 binocular, corrected with contact lenses or spectacles. Far visual acuity less than 20/100 binocular for wearers of hard contacts or spectacles, uncorrected. Successful long-term soft contact lens wearers (that is, 6 months without a problem) are not subject to the uncorrected standard.
Capable of successfully completing a thorough character investigation and verification and a psychological assessment.
Newly appointed employees must establish residence within Butler County or a contiguous county within 364 days of the effective date of appointment.
The ranking examination consists of a written test. The passing score on the written test is seventy percent (70%). Any applicable credits will be added only to a passing test score (total maximum credit allowable equals 20 points) and include a five (5) point credit for possession of a current and valid certificate awarded by the Ohio Dept. of Safety or other appropriate agency of the State of Ohio attesting to satisfactory completion of a prescribed training program for Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P), a credit of five (5) points for possession of the Ohio Firefighter II Certification, a 5% credit for Spanish-speaking ability and credit for military veteran active service of at least 180 consecutive days with honorable or under honorable conditions discharge. Such credits will be added only upon the presentation of the appropriate documentation before the conclusion of the three-day protest period following the date of the examination.
In addition to the written examination, candidates must also be capable of successfully completing each of the following qualifying test phases:
A physical condition test that includes simulations of essential firefighter activities
A thorough background investigation and character verification by polygraph assessment
A psychological evaluation
A thorough physical exam administered by a physician not more than 120 days prior to appointment
Substance abuse test (drug screen)
